WHY A SMALL WEDDING MIGHT NOT BE THAT BAD Planning a wedding following the coronavirus pandemic4/25/2020 The coronavirus pandemic has put a hold on weddings planned for 2020. While we all impatiently wait for life to return to normal, couples are facing disappointment, pressure and uncertainty as they ask themselves, ‘When will get married?’ and ‘What will that look like?’ With gatherings across Ontario are now restricted to 5 people, Spring weddings have had to be postponed. At this stage we are unsure if Summer weddings will also need to be postponed. What is likely however, is that when weddings are finally permitted to go ahead, we may continue to face restrictions on the number of people allowed at a gathering. This leaves couples to decide whether they’ll work with their vendors to postpone or scale back the guest list and host a smaller wedding. Although it’s not the traditional choice, there are more advantages to hosting a small wedding than you might realize.
2. You can spoil your smaller crowd a little more When I was planning my wedding, I knew I wanted a small guestlist. We were married in Australia and with a limited number of friends and family of the Groom able to make the trip from Canada, I wanted the guest list to be balanced. As we reviewed menus and beverage packages, coordinated renting furniture and décor we realized how many hundreds of dollars each person on the guest list equated to. We were excited to have a small guestlist in order to be able to allocate more to elements of our wedding that really counted to us. I wanted exquisitely unique floral and décor. We both wanted our guests to have lots of amazing food and free drinks – to be honest I really wanted a frozen margarita machine! As a result of our small guest list, we were able to achieve our wedding goals.
If you find yourself having saved some money as a result of the smaller guestlist, you could invest it into videography – a luxury you might not originally have budgeted for. That way, guests who were unable to attend your wedding can view the video or even join via live feed and experience it with you.
Couples often express anxiety about entertaining their guests and ensuring everyone is having a good time. When the guest list is too large, you will often have to have tables on your dancefloor. This can mean a tricky shuffle later in the evening that can leave guests booted from their table. This can cause a lot of stress for couples as they agonize over where to seat guests. A smaller guest list means a well-planned room that leaves a clear dancefloor to use as soon as the party picks up.
5. Your guests will thank you Once life resumes and we begin to gather in groups again, some of us will likely still be anxious in large crowds or when travelling. Although you may really want that guest to be at your wedding, there may be many guests who would prefer not to travel or attend large gatherings following the pandemic. Weddings are also a financial obligation, not only for the couple but their guests as well. The following months might be a financially difficult time for many of your guests. Infact, it may take a while for life to return to normal for all of us so a small wedding might be just the right decision. Regardless of your choice, the result is the same; you will be married and have happy memories of a beautiful day to look back on.
